Musical Instruments in the Ashmolean Museum. THE NEW CATALOGUE
The Ashmolean museum has a small but top quality collection of classical Italian violins and violas, fine English and Italian viols, a significant collection of bows, important baroque guitars, choice citterns, a representative group of English guittars, and a harpsichord and virginal representing the best of English keyboard making.
The original catalogue of instruments prepared by David Boyden in 1969 is long out of print. This new, definitive and complete catalogue has text by leading experts on the instrument types represented, including the latest research:
◦Michael Fleming – Viols
◦John Dilworth and Carlo Chiesa – Liras and violins
◦Tim Baker and Derek Wilson – Bows
◦Stephen Barber, Sandi Harris and Lynda Sayce – Guitars, citterns, English guittars
◦Charles Mould – Keyboard instruments
The new catalogue has 384 large format pages (370x270mm) accommodating large-scale images. There are over three hundred new studio photographs of unparalleled quality by American luthier and expert photographer Tucker Densley supplemented by numerous photographs of details.
